Best time to visit El Paso

El Paso experiences a desert climate, where the landscape is typically made up of cactus brush and desert plains. Summers (June-August) are hot and languid, but comfortable enough to walk around. The El Paso Downtown Street Festival in June is not to be missed – a celebration of the best local music acts. For slightly cooler temperatures, visit in spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November) when hiking conditions are the most favourable and you can catch the oldest Hispanic festival in the Southwest – Fiesta de las Flores. Winters (December-February) are not a favourable time to visit. Although you’ll most likely find the best hotel deals, weather can be unpredictable and harsh, with snowfall likely to occur.

El Paso is considered to be one of the safest cities in North America with low rates of violent crime. Practise the usual safety precautions as you would in any city, especially at night. Be forewarned that it is not advisable to cross the border into Mexico, as El Paso’s neighbouring city of Juarez has a notorious reputation for violent crime and drug cartels.

The rainy season brings flash flooding and mosquitoes. A good insect repellent will protect you against pesky mosquitoes. The intense summer heat can take its toll, so always stay well-hydrated and wear a strong sunscreen to avoid heatstroke and sunburn.

It is always recommended to take out travel insurance, in the event of unforeseeable theft and medical expenses.
