Best time to visit Houston

Popular seasons to visit this rodeo capital are spring (February-April) and autumn (September-November). Outdoor attractions are in full bloom during spring and al fresco dining is a lovely way to sample some of Texas’ tastiest food. Expect festival mayhem in March and April, particularly the Livestock Show and Rodeo, seeing a surge in visitors and hotel prices. Alternatively, autumn ushers in welcoming temperatures and even more outdoor events, set against a kaleidoscope of amber and gold. Summers (May-August) are hot and sticky with a muggy haze lingering over the city. If the heat and frequent thunderstorms don’t put you off, you’re bound to score some great deals on accommodation. Houston’s short winter season of December and January is not a bad time to visit. Although there are fewer festivals, you’ll have the top attractions all to yourself!

As in any other metropolitan area, common sense and safety precautions are required when visiting Houston. Avoid walking alone through dark and deserted areas and keep money and valuables out of sight. If you’re renting a car, be sure to keep it locked in parking areas. The METRO rail track is a hotspot for accidents if you’re unfamiliar with the intersections. Left turns are not permitted. Be very careful when crossing the tracks, especially at night, when oncoming trains are not always heard.

Houston is vulnerable to hurricanes during the summer, so stay abreast of weather forecasts and be aware of evacuation routes in your area.

It is always recommended to take out travel insurance, in the event of unforeseeable theft and medical expenses.
