Best time to visit Montenegro

Montenegro experiences its best weather between April and September. The coast experiences temperatures around the mid- to upper thirties, while the interior offers slightly cooler conditions. If you’re planning to visit the coast, skip July and August, that’s when the beaches get uncomfortably congested. Rather visit during June and September, when the weather is great, but there is less pressure on the local facilities. For the cheapest time to stay in Montenegro, consider visiting between late-October and early-April. Make sure to stick to the coast around this time for milder temperatures, since the temperatures of the interior fall as low as -20°C.

Prepare to visit one of the jewels of the Balkans: Montenegro. The small nation, situated along the Adriatic Sea, is rich with history, natural beauty and a welcoming culture.

Explore Montenegro’s medieval towns along the coast. In Budva, discover the ancient fortress, towers and gates of the Old Town. In Kotor, find evidence of the town’s incredible history: numerous empires and invaders occupied the destination, including the Roman Empire, Venice and Austro-Hungary.

Make sure to enjoy Montenegro’s gorgeous natural sights. There is the beautiful coastline, making the country home to some of Europe’s most stunning seaside scenery. When the beaches get crowded, skip the hordes by stepping into this country’s wild side, with the rocky mountains of Prokletije and Durmitor and Biogradska Gora’s primeval forest.

But what truly makes Montenegro a delightful destination to visit is its people. While you are likely to get locals touting their wares, you have a better chance of receiving a spontaneous hug and being treated to delicious local cuisine.

Health & Safety While the warm hospitality of locals allows Montenegro to enjoy a high level of safety, like all places in the world, there are criminal activities. The police, however, are generally fast in combatting crime.

Should you be near the border with Kosovo, stick to the main roads. There have been reports of unexploded landmines along the Kosovo border. Avoid areas where there is military activity.

In the resort towns of Kotor, Budva, Sveti Stefan and Herceg Novi, you will encounter beggars and pickpockets. The beggars are part of organised crime. Avoid giving them any money, as that could make you a target for criminals. Make sure to always sling your bags around your shoulder with the pouch in front, where you can keep your arm or hand across it. You should carry your money under your clothing.

It would be wise to get the routine vaccinations four to six weeks before entering Montenegro. These include the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella vaccine, polio vaccine and the yearly flu shot. Another vaccine that you should get is for hepatitis A, as there is the risk of being exposed to contaminated food and water in Montenegro. You may also need to vaccinate yourself against hepatitis B (sexual contact, contaminated needles and blood products) and rabies (animal bites, for travellers spending time outdoors).
