Best time to visit Praslin Island

As the Seychelles experiences consistently warm temperatures and sunshine throughout the year, any time is an ideal time to visit. When visitors choose to go usually depends on their choice of activities. The weather pattern in the Seychelles is generally regulated by two contrasting wind currents: the north-westerly wind which blows between the months of October and March, and the south-easterly wind which blows during the months of May to September. Visitors wishing to go fishing should visit between October and April, and visitors wishing to dive and surf/windsurf should plan their visit between May and September. Snorkelling and swimming are year-round holiday activities. The Seychelles does experience moderate year-round rainfall usually in the form of short rain showers that appear suddenly, lasting for about an hour before the sun reappears. The months of December to March see the lowest tourist turnover due to high rainfall.

The Seychelles islands are a holiday destination that need no introduction. Iconic in its appeal and popularity, this tropical destination is never short of visitors seeking sea, sand and endless sunshine. The island of Praslin is the second-largest island in the archipelago and offers an exciting variety of attractions to holidaymakers. In addition to its fabulous main beach, Anse Lazio Beach, Praslin is home to two nature reserves: Praslin National Park and Vallée de Mai.

Both of these parks offer beautiful forested surroundings, waterfalls and walking trails. Hikers will enjoy hiking the local hills which offer a panoramic view of the island and ocean. The Praslin Museum provides visitors with an interesting history of the development of the Seychelles, as well as its history and local culture. Traditional practices like coconut de-husking are also offered, and visitors are encouraged to give the surprisingly tricky practice a try!

Praslin is a very safe place to visit, however the usual safety practices when travelling are encouraged. Keep a close eye on personal possessions, particularly in busy areas such as airports, bus stops and hotel lobbies. Avoid walking down dark or deserted lanes after hours. It is not encouraged to swim alone or in isolated beaches. The tap water on Praslin is generally safe to drink in hotels and resorts, but underdeveloped areas may produce water of a lower quality, so rather stick to bottled water and do not drink water from the local rivers, lakes and ponds.

Holidaymakers are spoilt for choice when it comes to Praslin accommodation. Praslin is divided into two main districts- Baie Saint Anne and Grand Anse. Both these areas are equally ideal to stay in, offering restaurants, bars, cafes and a small amount of nightlife. Accommodation is varied and tailored to suit the individual needs of every visitor. Luxurious hotels and resorts, mid-range hotels and bed-and-breakfasts as well as budget self-catering cottages are all available. Most of these facilities are within walking distance to the beach, if not on the beachfront itself. Restaurants, shops and bars are also all easily reachable due to the size of the island.

Praslin offers various forms of public transport to visitors. The most popular and inexpensive form is the bus system in Praslin. The buses follow set routes around the island and are easy to navigate. Taxis are available and offer full-day and half-day tours around the island. Ensure the vehicle clearly displays a taxi licence and contains the “TAXI” light on the roof. Be sure to negotiate an agreed fare before getting in the vehicle. Ferries transport visitors between islands for a bit of “island-hopping”. Car rental is also an option, but please note that only drivers who are at least 23 years of age with one year’s driving experience will be allowed to drive in the Seychelles. Be sure to bring your national driver’s licence with you.
